A former general contractor, Hopkins bailed out 10 years ago and bought a 44-foot trawler. He started shuttling tourists to Amelia Island and the Bahamas, but the chemistry wasn’t quite right. He wanted to show people what Florida was like when he was a kid.So he bought a pontoon boat and began St. Johns River CruisesHis isn’t a typical tourist boat ride. It’s a history lesson, an ecology lesson and a biology lesson taught by a man who was raised on these waters.
He shows how the size of a sabal palm’s root ball can be used to guage the extent of erosion, how the temperature inside the nest decides the sex of alligator hatchlings and marvels at an eagle’s flight as if he, like some of his passengers, were seeing it for the very first time.
“As soon as everyone’s finished eating their lunch,” he chuckles at about the midpoint of his two-hour cruise, “we’ll talk about how great blue herons feed their young.” Sparing you the Technicolor version, it has something to do with the birds gobbling fish and, uh, regurgitating them into, well, maybe it’s better to get it straight from the captain.
